Classic Bhutan
This well-paced nine day cultural tour program offers a comprehensive journey through Bhutan, beautifully blending the kingdom’s cultural treasures, historical landmarks, pristine valleys, and soft adventure. Navigating through varying altitudes and stunning terrains, the route transitions from the bustling contemporary capital to serene, ecologically protected valleys, concluding with Bhutan’s most iconic spiritual hikes.
The adventure begins with an arrival in Paro, where travelers are treated to views of Mount Jomolhari before making a scenic one-hour drive to Thimphu, the nation’s capital. Thimphu serves as a fascinating introduction to Bhutanese life, standing out as the world’s only capital city without traffic lights. The first two days focus on acclimatization and cultural immersion within the capital. Travelers visit the massive 51-meter Buddha Point for sweeping city views, explore the colorful stamp collections at Bhutan Posts, and observe traditional weaving at the Royal Textile Academy. The capital’s itinerary also includes the National Library, home to one of the world's largest books. We then enjoy walking at the Takin Wildlife Preserve, a traditional handmade paper factory, and the vibrant Centenary Farmers Market, ending with a visit to the majestic Tashichhodzong fortress.
On the third day, the journey heads eastward on a scenic four to five hour drive to the enchanting Phobjikha Valley. This road trip crosses the high-altitude Dochula Pass (3,100 meters), offering panoramic vistas of the Himalayas. Phobjikha is a highly protected conservation area celebrated for its rich natural heritage and unique ecosystems. Day four is dedicated entirely to this valley, featuring a visit to the 16th-century Gangtey Monastery and a gentle one-to-two-hour trek along the Gangtey Nature Trail. This trail cuts through the winter sanctuary of the endangered black-necked cranes. Travelers also explore the Crane Information Center and visit a local farmhouse to connect directly with the traditional, rural Bhutanese way of life.
Leaving the high valleys behind, the tour retraces its steps on day five for a short drive to Punakha, the medieval capital of Bhutan known for its fertile agricultural fields. The afternoon features a pleasant walk through rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, a famous fertility temple dedicated to the unorthodox saint Drukpa Kinley, popularly known as the "Divine Madman". Day Re-emphasizes Punakha's architectural grandeur. The morning begins with a hike to the Khamsum Yulay Namgyal Chorten for dramatic views of the northern Himalayas. In the afternoon, we s cross a historic cantilever bridge to explore the magnificent Punakha Dzon, the "castle of great happiness" which is situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, this is followed by a walk across the kingdom's longest suspension bridge.
The final leg of the journey returns to Paro on day seven via another scenic mountain drive. Upon arrival, our travelers explore the Ta Dzong National Museum and the 17th-century Paro Rimpung Dzong before enjoying the ambiance of Paro town. The undisputed climax of the trip takes place on day eight with a deeply rewarding five-hour hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang). Perched precariously on a cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor, this deeply sacred spiritual site marks the location where Guru Rinpoche historically meditated. After a final night spent celebrating the completion of this iconic trek, the journey concludes on day nine with a transfer back to the Paro airport for onward flights.
